A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the president had been seized.

One account, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity just before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on inside information," said an industry expert.

Several of other individuals also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on Monday seeks to ban public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
